Mango plum

Family: Anacardiaceae - Genus: Bouea

Mango Plum can be found near Special School of the Thai Child Development Foundation and in Paksong area.

 

The mango plum, also know as commonly known as marian plum, gandaria or plum mango, is an evergreen tree, which grows to heights of 25 meters. The fruit (resembling a mango) are green in color when young and mature to an orange/yellow, with the seed being pink.


Mango plum flowers in November to December, and fruit appears from April to May.


 

The papaya is a small, sparsely branched tree, usually with a single stem growing from 5 to 10 meter tall, with spirally arranged leaves confined to the top of the trunk. The lower trunk is usually scarred where leaves and fruit were borne. All parts of the plant contain latex.

This evergreen tree grows to heights of 25 meters.


The mango plum tree can is popular as an ornamental fruit bearing shade tree due to its dense foliage





 

The leaves of the papaya are large, 50-70 cm in diameter, with seven lobes.

MANGO PLUM LEAVES

Its leaves elliptic in shape, and range from 13 to 45 centimetre long and from 5 to 7 wide wide.


The leaves can be eaten raw when they are still young, and can be used in salads.







 


The flowers are five-parted; the male flowers have the stamens fused to the petals. The female flowers have a superior ovary and five contorted petals loosely connected at the base. The flowers are sweet-scented, open at night, and wind- or insect-pollinated.

The flowers have oblong-obovate petals which are yellowish or light yellowish to green of 1.5-2.5 millimetre × 1 millimetre.

The small yellow flowers are hidden in among the foliage.









 
The fruit is a large berry that is generally spherical or cylinder in form and about 15–45 centimeter  long and 10–30 centimeter in diameter. The fruit grows on the stem of the tree.

MANGO PLUM FRUIT

The Plum Mango (ma prang) is related to the mango and the entire fruit, including its single seed, is edible.

The fruit is consumed green as well as ripe.

The fruit range from sweet to sour in flavor, and has a light smell of turpentine.




 


MANGO PLUM WOOD

The wood is moderately hard to hard. It is suitable for medium construction under cover, whilst other uses include veneer and plywood, planking, general cabinet works and furniture.

 

CULINARY USES OF MANGO PLUM

Both the leaves and fruit from the tree can be eaten.

The leaves can be eaten raw when they are still young, and can be used in salads.

The seed of the mango plum is edible, but bitter.


The ripe fruit is very acidic and has a mango-like flavor. It can be made into dishes such as pickles or compotes.


The young, green fruits are often eaten with a spicy dipping sauce, or are used to make a special kind of "sambal", a chili-based condiment, and in pickles, the bright purple parts in the big seed adding to the attraction of the sauce.
