The Dutchman's Pipe is an evergreen, perennial climbing vine, The species is widely cultivated as an ornamental on account of its showy flowers.
It is an ornamental plant, non edible.
Flowers can be seen at the end of the rainy season, from January to March.
THE VINE
Slightly woody vine, twining, attaining 5 meter in length. Stems cylindrical, slender, glabrous, with the pith hollow.
THE LEAVES
Leaves alternate; blades 5-16 x 6-18 centimeter, broadly ovate, almost kidney-shaped, pale green above, glaucous beneath.
THE FLOWERS
The flower of Dutchman's pipe is shaped like a meerschaum pipe, giving the vine its common name.
Flowers solitary, pendulous 7.5-17 centimeter long, the flower stalk is slender, four times as long as the leaf stalk.
THE SEEDPODS
The seedpod capsule is 6-11 centimeter long, oblong or oblanceolate, with 6 ribs, the apex mucronate, the base acute; seeds numerous, winged, 7-15 mm long.
The seeds of are winged, relatively small (7-15 mm), light, and flat.
CULINARY USES
The Dutchman's Pipe has no parts that are suitable for human consumption.
Roots and stems are poisonous when digested..

The roots are used by humans in traditional medicine. The roots of this plant (although toxic when digested) are well known as an antidote for snake bites in India.
